About Off The Track Horses
Off the Track Horses is a platform dedicated to thoroughbreds and the possibilities that await them beyond racing.We bring together horse owners, riders, trainers and racing industry voices to share knowledge, experiences and stories about life after the track. Whether you’re welcoming your first retired racehorse or have spent years working with thoroughbreds, this is a place to learn, connect and celebrate their versatility. Our website and podcast explore the rewards and challenges of caring for and retraining off-the-track horses, with honest conversations and practical insights. From much-loved companions to competition horses, we celebrate the many ways these horses enrich our lives.
Off the Track Horses was founded by Jo McKinnon, a broadcaster, journalist and lifelong horsewoman whose career spans racing, equestrian sport and storytelling. Jo’s experience includes presenting with Sky Racing and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, alongside producing the award-winning equestrian series A Racetrack Somewhere. Throughout her career, she has brought the stories of horses and the people around them to a wider audience.
Based on the Liverpool Plains in New South Wales, Jo runs Plains Equine, where she works hands-on with horses, including retraining and developing retired thoroughbreds. Her experience in the saddle and daily care of these horses informs the questions she asks and the stories she shares.
As founder of the website and host and producer of the Off the Track Horses Podcast, Jo brings together her media expertise and practical horse experience to build a welcoming community, encourage informed care and celebrate the thoroughbred beyond racing.
Off The Track Horses features an online marketplace promoting available horses, and with so many off the track events now being staged throughout Australia, there's an up-to-date calendar of events and dedicated coverage.

From feeding and wellbeing to retraining and finding the right partnership, we aim to make information accessible and encourage patient, thoughtful care. Through our podcast and online community, we connect the racing and equestrian worlds, share experiences and showcase the many opportunities available to thoroughbreds after their racing careers.At the heart of Off the Track Horses is a simple belief: every horse deserves to be understood, valued and given the opportunity to thrive.
